CANADIAN WHISKY
Whisky originated in Canada in the 19th century, brought by Scottish and Irish immigrants who settled in present-day Ontario, bringing with them the craft of whisky production. The popularity of Canadian whisky spread rapidly, and by 1840 there were around 200 distilleries in Canada. Today, the main Canadian distilleries are located in Ontario and Alberta, with smaller numbers in Manitoba and Nova Scotia.
The success of Canadian whisky truly took off during the American Prohibition era as well as the American Civil War.
All Canadian whiskies are blended, with only a few exceptions being “single malt” whiskies. By law, Canadian whisky must age for a minimum of three years, and flavors such as sherry, wine, or fruit juices can be added. These added flavors create the main distinction between Canadian whisky and other whiskies around the world, where the only ingredients are grains, water, and yeast.
