AMERICAN WHISKY

When we say “American whiskey,” most people immediately think of “bourbon,” but they may also wonder what the difference is between “whiskey” and “bourbon” - the symbol of American spirits.

The main difference is that, by law, American bourbon must contain at least 51% corn before fermentation, though it usually contains between 70-80% corn. It also includes a smaller percentage of barley (around 8%), and in many American bourbons, rice is added, giving it distinct spicy notes. Traditionally, bourbon is distilled in Bourbon County, Kentucky, while other types of American whiskey can be produced in various distilleries across the USA. American whiskey must age for a minimum of 2 years in oak barrels, which contribute to its characteristic “sweeter” flavor.
