Rakija is a strong alcoholic beverage made by distilling fruit, most similar to brandy or vodka, and is extremely popular-both in consumption and production-throughout our region. Some types of rakija are aged in wooden barrels to achieve a richer aroma and the golden color that develops through this process.
The most famous type of rakija is šljivovica (plum brandy), but there are also brandies made from grapes, apricots, apples, pears, quinces, figs, and raspberries.
